The shape of a German verb

Three things worth knowing.

The endings are regular

In the present, most verbs take -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en on the stem: ich brauche, du brauchst, er braucht, wir brauchen, ihr braucht, sie brauchen. The list above shows where a verb departs from that.

Some stems change for du and er

Strong verbs shift a vowel in the second and third person: sehen becomes du siehst, er sieht; fahren becomes du fährst, er fährt. The other persons keep the stem.

Prefixes and the Perfekt go to the end

A separable prefix leaves its verb in a main clause: anfangen gives ich fange an. The Perfekt puts haben or sein in second place and the participle last: ich habe gebraucht, ich bin gekommen.

The same material, inside the course

What changes with an account.

Here the forms are a sample. In the course, conjugation is one of four drills, it follows the verbs you have learned, and the Perfekt opens once the present is settled.

Words come back on a schedule

Each word gets its own spaced-repetition timing, so the ones you miss return sooner and the ones you know stay out of the way.

Lessons in small batches, typed both ways

Meet a few words at a time with article, plural, and meaning, then type them German to English and English to German.

Four drills, and the whole course

Gender, verb forms, prepositions, and sentence gaps open as your vocabulary grows, across a course of more than 17,000 entries.

The verbs, forms, and sentences come from the Wortplay course. Its vocabulary draws on the Ding dictionary and on frequency data from wordfreq; audio is generated German speech. The PDF and the Anki file carry the same notice. About the sources.
