About Wortplay

Wortplay is a guided German vocabulary course operated by WattWisdom, LLC.

A course to follow

Wortplay brings vocabulary lessons, scheduled reviews, and related practice together. You learn words in a planned order and type answers in both directions: German to English and English to German.

Optional challenges focus on articles, verb forms, prepositions, and sentences. The course supports broader language learning alongside grammar, reading, listening, and conversation. Completing it does not establish a CEFR proficiency level.

Where the material comes from

The German–English vocabulary draws on the Ding dictionary by Frank Richter at TU Chemnitz, with frequency information from wordfreq. Wortplay adds filtering, ordering, sense selection, learning notes, and editorial revisions. These source projects do not endorse Wortplay.

Examples and exercise coverage vary by entry. Supporting material is still being expanded, particularly in later levels.

Reviewing and improving the course

Content reports help identify translations, examples, and accepted answers that need review. Learners can report a problem from a challenge or contact us with a word or example to check. Reports do not automatically change a grade.

The course combines dictionary material with editorial work; it is not a claim that every entry has been individually verified. Read more about content coverage.

Pronunciation audio

Pronunciation clips use synthetic German speech from Microsoft Azure. Coverage varies, and some clips may sound unnatural. Where supported, word playback can fall back to a German voice on your device.
