Wortplay, operated by WattWisdom, LLC, stores what it needs to run your learning account and respond when you contact us. There is no advertising on the site, no tracking across other sites, and nothing here is sold. If an ad brought you here, what is passed back to that ad's network is described below, and it never includes your email or your study data.
What is stored, and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| An email address previously left for a launch update | To send the requested launch announcement once. It is not used for anything else, and it is deleted after that message is sent, or on request. |
| Your email address and any question you send through the contact page | To read your message and reply. These are sent through our email provider to the Wortplay support inbox and are not added to a mailing list. |
| Your email address | To identify your account and send password resets. |
| If you sign in with Google: the name on your Google account and a link to its profile picture | Google sends these with every sign-in. The picture is shown as your account button at the top of the app, loaded by your browser straight from Google. The name is not shown or used anywhere. |
| Which words you have studied, their review stage and next review time | This is the spaced-repetition schedule. Without it the app cannot decide what to show you. |
| How often you answered each word correctly, and how you got it wrong | Accuracy, your streak, and the list of words you keep missing. |
| Notes and extra answers you write on a word | Your own memory aids, shown back to you and accepted when you type them. |
| Problem reports you choose to send, including the question, submitted answer and optional note | To review and correct learning content. Reports are linked to your account and included in your data export; they do not automatically change grades. |
| Your level, settings (including the time zone your device reports) and any unfinished study session | So closing the tab mid-review does not lose your place, and so days, streaks and the daily review cap follow your own clock. |
| A short-lived record of submitted answers | So a retried request after a dropped connection is not graded twice. Deleted after seven days. |
| Which pages of the site were opened during a visit, for how many seconds each was on screen, the page the visit started on, the site it came from, any campaign labels or ad click identifier in the link that brought it, the country the connection came from, and whether it was a phone or a computer | To see which pages are read and which links bring people who go on to study, without a third-party analytics service. A visit is a random number, not a name. The country is the one our host names for the connection; the IP address itself and the browser description are not stored. If you create an account during a visit, that visit is linked to the account so that a sign-up can be counted for the link that brought it. |
| Public practice starts and completions, successful noun lookups, completed text checks, downloads and course-link clicks, with the page, a limited action label, a random event identifier and time | To understand which resources are useful. These measurements do not include your quiz answers, searched noun or pasted text, and they never change learning progress. |
| Trial creation, email-account creation or conversion, email confirmation and successful subscription payment dates; payment identifiers, currency and amount | To distinguish a trial from an email signup and measure how visits lead to learning and paid use. Learning reports use existing completed lesson and review records. Payment records come from verified Stripe notifications; they contain no card details. |
What is not stored
The account form does not ask for your name, address, phone number or date of birth; the only name held is the one a Google sign-in passes on, as above. Any personal details you include in a contact message are part of that message. No card details are stored: a subscription is paid on Stripe's own page, and Wortplay keeps only Stripe's identifiers for your customer record and subscription, the plan, its status, when the current period ends, and the limited payment records described above. No third-party advertising or analytics trackers, and no advertising network's script on any page: page views are counted by Wortplay itself, as described above, with no cookie and no IP address. No advertising profile is built from your behaviour. First-party usage reporting is limited to the purposes described above.
Where it lives
Your account and study data are held in a Supabase-managed PostgreSQL database in Canada (ca-central-1). The site itself is served by Vercel. If you use Google to sign in, Google handles that sign-in and tells us your email address, your name and a link to your profile picture, and your browser loads that picture from Google to show it. Emails about your account are sent through a transactional email provider.
Each of these is a processor acting on our instructions. Every row of your study data is stamped with your account and protected by database rules that refuse to return one account's rows to another.
If an ad brought you here
Ad networks add a click identifier to the links in their ads. If you arrive through one and then create an account or subscribe, Wortplay may tell that network so it can count which of its ads worked: the click identifier, whether it led to a sign-up or a subscription, when, and for a subscription the plan's price. Nothing else is sent: not your email address, not your study data, and no script of theirs runs on this site.
What is kept in your browser
All on your own device: your sign-in session, so you are not asked to sign in on every page; your light or dark theme choice; answers you have given that are still on their way to the server, kept only until they arrive so a dropped connection loses nothing; your scores on the free practice pages; and a random visit number, which expires after thirty minutes without activity and is how pages opened in one sitting are counted as one visit. The number of the visit that first brought you is kept for ninety days so that an account created on a later visit still counts for the link that found it. None of these is used to track you across other sites, none is shared with anyone, and clearing your browser data removes them all.
Your place in the first five lessons before signing in is also kept in this browser, when browser storage is available. Clearing browser data removes that progress. If you complete those lessons and create a new account, a completion record with its start and finish times is attached to the account so the five lessons are saved and scheduled for review. It does not replace progress in an existing account.
Your data is yours
- Take it with you. Settings → Data & backup → Download progress backup gives you your study data as a single readable JSON file: your level and settings, progress, notes, review history, drill progress and the problem reports you sent. No request needed, no waiting. For the rest (visits linked to your account, and your subscription and payment records), ask through the contact page.
- Correct it. Notes and settings are editable in the app.
- Delete it. Account & subscription, in the account menu → Delete my account. That removes your account and every row attached to it — progress, notes, history — immediately and for good. There is no recovery period and no copy kept, so take a backup first if you might want one.
If you are in the UK, EU, or another place with similar law, these are your access, portability, rectification and erasure rights, and you can complain to your local data protection authority.
How long it is kept
Study data lasts as long as your account. Delete the account and it goes with it. The seven-day answer-replay cache clears itself.
Children
Wortplay is not aimed at children under 13 and does not knowingly hold their data. If you believe a child has created an account, use the contact page below and it will be removed.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected or who sees it, the notice on this page will change and anyone with an account will be told by email before it takes effect.
