Wortplay is a German vocabulary app operated by WattWisdom, LLC. These terms are short because the arrangement is simple: you study, we keep your progress, either of us can walk away.
Your account
One account per person. Keep your password to yourself — anyone who has it can read and delete your progress. Tell us if you think someone else is using your account.
You need to be 13 or older to create an account.
What you may do
Use Wortplay to learn German, on as many of your own devices as you like. Export your data whenever you want.
What you may not do
- Automate the app to scrape the vocabulary catalogue wholesale, or resell it as a dataset.
- Attempt to reach another learner's account or data.
- Disrupt the service for other people.
Your notes stay yours
Notes and synonyms you write on a word belong to you. We store them so we can show them back to you and accept them as answers, and we do not use them for anything else.
Where the vocabulary comes from
The German–English word list is built from the Ding dictionary by Frank Richter at TU Chemnitz, used under the GPL, with frequency ordering from wordfreq. Learning notes, sense selection and the expressions are original work. Full attribution is in the project's third-party notices. Wortplay is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any of these projects.
What we promise, and what we do not
We will look after your progress and give you a way to take it with you. We do not promise the site is always available, that every translation is perfect, or that studying here will make you fluent. A translation can be wrong; tell us and it gets fixed.
Wortplay is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses arising from using it — and your own exported backup is the real protection against losing your progress.
Paying for it
The first two levels’ worth of new words are free. Words you mark as already known do not count towards them, and the free range never goes past Level 20. Everything after it is part of a subscription, billed monthly or yearly in advance through Stripe, which takes the payment on its own page; Wortplay never sees your card number. The price is shown before you subscribe, and again on your billing page.
You can cancel at any time from Account & subscription, in the account menu. Cancelling stops the next charge; you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for, and partial periods are not refunded. If a price changes, you will be told by email at least 30 days before it applies to you, and you can cancel before it does.
Ending it
Delete your account whenever you like, and your data goes with it. We may close an account that breaks these terms, and will say why unless we are not allowed to.
Changes
If these terms change materially, anyone with an account will be told by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Wortplay afterwards means the new terms apply.
