Under the hood
Each word is looked up once, in your browser. Here is what the lookup knows.
The course’s words are listed with their forms: plurals and case endings, each verb’s present, past and participle, and each adjective’s endings and comparison. Werkzeuge is Werkzeug, benutzt is benutzen. A few rules catch what the list misses, such as hätte for haben and gib for geben.
A separable verb is found across its clause: in Ich stehe früh auf, the words stehe and auf are aufstehen. A compound the course does not list counts as its parts, at the later level of the two, so Kuhstall needs Kuh and Stall.
Names and words beyond the course are listed apart and do not count toward the shares, and neither do one-letter words. Articles, pronouns and the other grammar words count at Level 0, beside the words most people know from any introduction to German. Where a word could be two cards, the earlier one is taken.
The shares count running words, so a word used five times counts five times. Studies of reading in a second language put comfortable reading at about 98% of the words known, and reading with some help at about 95%. A level is where the course teaches a word; the grammar around it is yours to bring. How levels work.

The checker tells you which words stand between you and a text. The course teaches them in this order, a few at a time, and brings each back until it sticks.
Each word gets its own spaced-repetition timing, so the ones you miss return sooner and the ones you know stay out of the way.
